History of Probus

Probus was started by Rotary in Surrey, England in 1965 for Professional and business people. It progressed to New Zealand in 1974, and Australia in 1976. It is now in 22 countries with over 300,000 members in 4,000 clubs. In May 2008, Australia had 1,787 clubs with 141,438 members.

Probus does not involve itself in fundraising projects but provides an opportunity for active retirees and semi-retirees from all walks of life to enhance their retirement by stimulating the minds, forming friendships and enjoying a variety of outings. Many clubs with large memberships organise a variety of overseas trips and any smaller clubs can register to travel with these other clubs for such trips and take advantage of the very special prices that Probus nominated travel agents arrange.

Probus clubs all have a constitution embodying clauses intended to ensure that the character and objectives of Probus remain substantially uniform. All clubs hold monthly meetings following the same format, and for details of our meetings, go to our Meetings web page.
